Holland Alumni Conference brings together graduates from all over the world
31 May 2011
Olesya Chaplynska:
The Holland Alumni Conference organized by the Nuffic was a great reminder of how big and diverse the world is and what an important role does Netherlands play in it. 200 participants from all over the world, some from countries which are difficult to pin point on the map, gathered in the Hague to discuss worldly problems and make an attempt at solving them.
The whole purpose of the event was to remind us, the Dutch alumni, how great the Netherlands are, so that as Holland ambassadors we are able to promote the country and its education system world wide. Nuffic didn’t spare any measures available to reach its goal: great organization, 4* hotel, fabulous reception, very senior speakers. All of us were very honored to be a part of such event.
Now we know that the Netherlands is the home more than 190 nationalities, its the 16th largest economy in the world, while occupying only 0.008% of Earth's surface; 2/3 of its territory is beneath sea level and there are over 17000 km of dams to hold the water; there are more than 1500 English taught programs in the Netherlands, and over 76000 international students in 2009-2010. And in spite all the impressive figures, we still love Holland dearly!

The alumni conference turned out to be a great success with great participants it began with a speech delivered by mayor of Den Haag. Mr. J. J. van Aartsen strongly emphasised the importance of international students and link between alumni not only for the Dutch economy but also for economic prosperity across the globe.
During the day everyone took part in a case study competition. Alumni were divided into groups and asked to solve real life problems for Dutch companies or a government institution and present their findings and solutions. The day was concluded by a social get togeather and a formal dinner.
The second day was devoted entirely to alumni skills training workshops with four topics to choose from: presentation skills, trasferable skills, gender and sustainability.

Studying in Holland was like a rainbow. People coming from all over the words created a great international atmosphere, the extended curriculum created diversity and the cross-cultural exchange of experiences was always adding a colorful and powerful touch to life. There were many stereotypes I associated with The Netherlands – the wooden shoes, the cheese, the tulips. All these are now images I associate with the Oranje country; but now there is also the profession and the education I received in the country of 17000 km of dikes.
Coming to the Holland Alumni Conference 2011 was also like a rainbow – a diversity of people present, old memories shared with new fellow Alumni, the broadening of an international network taking place in my presence, as well as improved their professional skills alongside Dutch education promotion.
