Continuing your studies

Dec 18, 2009

International students are allowed to study in Holland for a certain maximum number of years, which is generally equal to the number of years of the study programme chosen plus an additional two years. This means that the total duration of study will depend on the type of study you choose. If you have not finished a study programme within the maximum duration of stay, you cannot extend your residence permit for the purpose of study. If, however, you have obtained a diploma and you wish to enrol on another programme of study, you may extend your residence permit. If you have obtained a master’s degree and would like to go on to do a PhD, you will need to apply for a change in the purpose of your residence permit, as PhD positions are classified as work rather than as study in the Netherlands.
